Our DGSA – Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor course builds the knowledge and skills required to become certified and to educate and prepare a learner to demonstrate their ability to understand, interpret and apply the ADR transport regulations and pass the CILT examination.

The course takes place in ISM Tallaght Training Centre over five days and provides the skills and knowledge required by the European Communities (Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment) Regulations. The regulations require that the drivers and others involved in the transport of  dangerous goods by road are adequately trained and can apply the legislation as required in the transport of dangerous goods by road in tanks, in bulk, and in packages. This includes the consignment, packing, loading, filling, and unloading of  dangerous goods in relation to their carriage.

ISM Training Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor course is delivered in partnership with Eamon McEvoy, the leading ADR Trainer in Ireland.

Who Should Attend?

This course is open to anyone who is involved in the transport of dangerous goods, including the carriage of dangerous waste.  There are no prerequisites or specific entry requirements. While knowledge of dangerous goods is an advantage, it is not necessary. The course will cover all the necessary information required to become a DGSA – Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor and to pass the CILT examination.

What Qualifications Will I Receive?

All trainees will receive a DGSA Certificate issued by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, provided they sit and pass the DGSA exams. A DGSA certificate is valid for five years.

What is a DGSA?

This certificate is issued by the HSA in accordance with CILT. It certifies a person to advise companies and transport operators on the carriage of dangerous goods by road in Europe, including the UK and other non-EU member states in Europe.
This certificate is valid for five years on successful completion of the CILT examination.
Undertakings involved in the consignment or carriage of dangerous goods by road, and related activities, must appoint a vocationally qualified safety adviser or advisers. A DGSA’s function is to advise you on health, safety and environmental matters in connection with the carriage of dangerous goods. A DGSA is a person certified to provide advice to undertakings whose activities include the consignment, carriage, or the related packing, loading, filling or unloading of dangerous goods, to monitor compliance with legal requirements and to ensure the preparation of an annual report.

What does DGAS training cover?

The course covers all the requirements to ensure that you are ready for your examinations with CILT. The module will include the scope and applicability of ADR, training of persons involved in the carriage of DG’s safety obligations in ADR, high consequence dangerous goods, general provision of each of the nine classes of DG’s, how to interpret the Dangerous Goods list, limited quantities and excepted quantities, the use of packaging, portable tanks and fixed tanks, marking and labelling, provisions surrounding loading and unloading, and provision concerning transport equipment and transport operation including training of persons involved in the industry.
An understanding of The carriage of dangerous goods by road and SI 349 of 2011, including amendments. It is also required for the examination. The content is very comprehensive and fully prepares a learner for the knowledge and the required exam.

Can I do this course online?

No, the course is currently available in ISM Training Centre Tallaght, and it is delivered in partnership with ADR Trainer Eamon McEvoy.

What is the standard course duration, and how many years is the certification for?

The course is delivered over five full days. The CILT certification is valid for a 5-year period. To renew a DGSA Cert, a cert holder is required to resit the DGSA exams every five years.

Is there an exam?

All DGSA examinations are open-book exams.
Paper 1 will be conducted on the morning of the examination.
Paper 2 will be conducted on the afternoon of the examination.

Do I need to have a Bus or Truck licence to do this course?

No, there is no requirement to have any form of previous transport experience or knowledge to successfully complete the course.

English is not my first language, is this course for me?

This is a mandatory course, and the language of the examination is English. A good understanding of English is necessary.
