What is ISM MEWP?

This course is for beginners and existing MEWP Operators in Ireland seeking certification training in Scissor Lift (3a) and Telescopic Boom (3b) machines. The training provided with this course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to prepare and safely operate a Scissor Lift and Telescopic Boom as outlined in Health and Safety Legislation.

What does MEWP training cover?

The ISM MEWP Operator course is a mix of theory and practice. It is designed to teach learners to manoeuvre, drive and position Scissor Lift (3a) and Telescopic Boom (3b) machines safely and proficiently. A Scissor Lift is used to lift one or multiple workers vertically up and down to high areas, and a Telescopic Boom is used to lift workers to areas inaccessible by a lift itself.

How long will the course take?

The course is a 1 Day course, starting at 8 am and finishing at 4 pm and includes ISM certification. The certification will After completion of the course, you will be valid to use in Irish working at height, construction and warehouse sites. This is not an international certification. If you require the international PAL card, you must do IPAF Scissor Lift (3a) and Telescopic Boom (3b) course.

Will there be any classroom work?

Yes, trainees will initially participate in classroom theory before starting their practical session. Our trainers are fully qualified and very experienced in delivering training also for those who are not native English speakers.

Should I also do Harness Training?

ISM offers an “Introduction to Harness” about MEWP Courses; this entails the correct procedure for applying and using the harness safely and securely for the MEWP training. The price of this is an additional €50.00 per person. From a health & safety point of view, it is recommended that you can use your work equipment correctly and have received adequate, regular training to do so.

IPAF Courses FAQs

What is IPAF?

IPAF stands for the International Powered Access Federation and is an internationally recognised standard for operating scissor lifts, self-propelled and static booms. These vehicles are called scissors, cherry pickers or telescopic booms.

What does IPAF training cover?

The IPAF Operator course is a mix of theory and practice and is designed to teach learners to manoeuvre, drive and position MEWPs safely and proficiently. The most popular courses are the 3a and 3b, which show you how to operate the scissor and self-propelled boom lifts. The 1b course covers additional vehicles such as vehicle-mounted platforms, trailers or push-arounds, static booms and spiders.

Can I do this course online?

You can complete the course’s theoretical element online, which takes approximately 3 hours. The eLearning is broken down into manageable sections that you can complete at your own pace and save and resume your training anytime. The course is available in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Once you complete your eLearning, you will need to book in for your practical assessment with ISM.

What is the course duration and how many years is the certificate for?

The course lasts 8 hours, and the certification is valid for 5 years.

We deliver public courses from our training centre in Tallaght, Dublin 24 and off-site nationwide at our customers’ locations.
