Expert Instruction

ISM’s Approved Pre-Test Instructors cover all Test Routes from every Driving Test Centre in Ireland. At ISM you are guaranteed a professional and personal service from our local qualified ADI Instructors.

During your short Pre-Test course, your instructor will cover all the manoeuvers and of course will correct all those “bad habits” to have you prepared properly for your Driving Test.

Professional Pre-Test tuition is essential if you are going to succeed and give yourself every chance to pass your Driving Test on your first time. One of the main reasons candidates fail the driving test is because of lack of preparation. With this in mind, ISM also offers practical pre-test courses that offer students a simulation of the Driving Test with one of our expert ADIs. These courses help build your confidence and specifically focus on the areas where you may need further practice. We recommend a Four-Hour Course (2 x 2-hour lessons) which will give you the best chance of passing your Driving Test the first time. Our pre-test lessons cover the actual test routes from every RSA test centre in the country. We have specialist Tutors based at all Driving Test Centres throughout Ireland.

Essential driver training

Your Success is Our Goal

Essential Driver Training, also known as EDT, is a mandatory training course of twelve car, B category licence, driving lessons. The learner driver curriculum is designed by the Road Safety Authority and it focuses on all the fundamental driving skills that car learner drivers need. It is part of the RSA’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme and is intended to improve road safety.

When you receive your learner permit, you will need to complete a minimum of 12 one-hour lessons before applying for your driving test. These 12 lessons are the EDTs and are regarded as a minimum number of lessons. In general, learner drivers need more lessons to prepare for a lifetime of safe driving habits and to pass their driving test the first time. Learning to drive is always an individual process and the pace of it depends on the learner’s existing skills, abilities and knowledge.

EDT learners will also be required to have an Essential Driver Training Logbook. This logbook will be filled in and signed off by your qualified ISM ADI after every EDT lesson.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) recommends that all 12 EDT Lessons should be spread out over the first six months of your new Learner Permit. They also suggest that Learner Drivers take filler lessons in between these EDT lessons if necessary. It is also recommended to get lots of practice with the help of a sponsor i.e. parent, guardian or family friend who possesses a Full Licence a minimum of 2 years. Make sure you are insured for this practice.

All our ADIs are fully qualified with new Dual-Control Cars which are fully insured for your training. Your Driving Instructor will follow the curriculum of the EDT lessons and aims to grow your confidence, skills and abilities to become a safe driver for life.

We at ISM have been teaching learner drivers for over sixty years. Our nationwide team of Approved Driving Instructors not only teaches you to drive, but we also assist you in accessing reduced car insurance via our insurance partners AXA. When you complete 12 Essential Driving Lessons with ISM you can get up to €400 off your car insurance. Click here to learn more about this exclusive AXA offer for ISM learner drivers.
