Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory RSA programme of 12 structured driving lessons for learner permit holders. Each lesson focuses on a specific driving skill, such as car controls, road positioning, hazard perception and sharing the road safely. EDT lessons must be completed with an RSA-approved instructor and logged on the RSA system before you can sit your driving test.
With over 65 years of experience, ISM offers EDT lessons nationwide, 7 days a week (subject to availability). Lessons are tailored to your pace, confidence, and ability. The goal is not just passing the test, but becoming a safe, confident driver for life. Lessons are booked in 2-hour slots. It is recommended that you book all six sessions (a total of 12 EDT lessons) in advance to guarantee regular lesson pacing and instructor availability. This also gives you the opportunity to plan additional practice outside of lessons with your sponsor. An EDT (Essential Driver Training) sponsor in Ireland, under the RSA (Road Safety Authority) programme, is an experienced driver—usually a family member or friend who has held a full licence for at least two years—who supervises and supports a learner driver’s practice between formal lessons. The sponsor helps the learner build confidence and skills using the official logbook, working alongside the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) to support a safe and structured learning experience.
Manual lessons: Once you pass, you can drive both manual and automatic cars.
Automatic lessons: Easier for some learners (no clutch or gears), but limits you to automatic cars only.
