ISM is approved by the RSA to provide Initial Basic Training (IBT). This is a 16 hour mandatory training course that teaches basic riding skills to learner motorcyclists. The IBT course syllabus includes 4 modules, which have to be completed in turn.
You can only move on to the next module when your instructor is satisfied you have learnt the necessary theory and demonstrated the practical skills to a safe basic level.
ISM are the market leaders providing Motorbike Lessons since 1964 and have conducted more IBT Motorbike Lessons than any other training school. We provide the best facilities, including Classrooms, Canteens and off-road Training Grounds.
ISM provide brand new fully insured bikes and gear (helmets/wetgear/hi-viz jackets etc) at no extra cost. Right now, we now have an unbeatable offer of the full IBT Course for €475.00 if you book your Training during weekdays (Monday - Friday). Otherwise the full IBT is €525.00. Both these offers are being run until 31st March 2012.
Course Details:
Module 1 (3 hours) covers:
Motorcycle Equipment- Motorcycles and their controls
- Basic Technical Checks
- Taking Machine on and off the stand
- Basic Safety Checks (POWER)
- Moving the Machine without aid of engine
- Precautions before starting (FIGS)
- Starting and stopping the engine
Module 2 (5 hours in ISM Training Grounds) covers:
Stopping the machine (Theory)- Moving off & Stopping in controlled fashion
- Ride in a straight line
- Correct use of brakes (all scenarios)
- Gears selecting and changing
- Rear Observation
- Junctions Left and Right using the Observation-Signal-Manoeuvre (OSM) and Position Speed-Look (PSL) routines
- Emergency stopping under full control
- Slalom
- U Turn manoeuvre
- Figure of eight
- Slow Riding under control
- Explanation and Application of the Motorcycle System (OSPSL)
Module 3 (2 hours) covers:
Importance of knowing the Rules of the Road- Visibility - "Be Seen"
- Road Positioning
- Rear Observation at appropriate times
- Road surfaces and Traffic Conditions
- Progress – Fast/Slow
- Hazard perception and anticipation
Module 4 (6 hours on-road) covers:
The application of Module 3 (in practice) whilst on a public road- Dealing with Junctions
- Dealing with Roundabouts
- Dealing with Traffic controls
- Dealing with Hills (incline & decline)
- Dealing with Hazards and Obstructions
When you have completed your IBT course, your ISM Motorbike Instructor will record the details of your training in your logbook and issue you with a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion.
