A special ceremony held at Subaru's Gunma factory in Ota-city, Japan, marked the start of production of one of this year's most anticipated new models, the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT 86. BRZ stands for Boxer, Rear-wheel drive, Zenith. That’s pretty clear isn’t it? Well, the first two parts are, and as for Zenith, that’s just Subaru’s way of saying this is the best.

The landmark event in the collaborative agreement between Subaru's parent company Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd (FHI) and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) was attended by the presidents of both corporations.

Subaru's Gunma Main Plant, which will produce both the Subaru and Toyota versions, has undergone a significant re-fitting to cope with the extra capacity. Subaru plans to produce the Impreza at the same…

A CREDIT CARD-style driving licence with a microchip holding information about the driver is to be introduced next year.

The cards will hold the driver’s photo, name, address, date of birth and licence type, and details of the issuing authority. It will also carry a record of any penalty points or endorsements on the driver’s record. This will allow gardaí at a checkpoint to examine a driver’s record. Currently, if a garda stops a motorist they cannot tell from examining the licence if the driver is disqualified.

The cards will have a number of security features to reduce fraud and counterfeiting. They will also hold information on restrictions such as whether drivers are required to wear glasses or use a hearing aid, or whether they are subject to curfews or a restricted…

The Minister for Transport has confirmed that 16 new penalty point offences for motorists are be introduced next year.

The new penalty point offences include targeting motorcylists and their passengers who do not wear helmets, where two points will be imposed.

Drivers who put a rear facing child seat in the front seat blocking an airbag will be hit with two points.

The penalties will be doubled if the driver unsuccessfully appeals the offence in court.

Other measures include a one point penalty if windscreens give a distorted view or for using a trailer without the proper lamps.

Motoring groups say they are concerned that the existing two point penalty for speeding may be increased…

In a bid to improve road safety on Irish roads, all new first time Motorbike-learner permit holders with effect from 6th December 2010 are required to undertake mandatory initial basic training (IBT) with an approved driving instructor (ADI).

Initial Basic Training (IBT) is a mandatory training course that teaches basic riding skills to learner motorcyclists. It is part of the RSA’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme and is intended to improve road safety and rider awareness. The 16 hour course is broken into four separate modules to be completed in sequence. These modules are a mixture of theory and practical riding skills and aims to gives new riders a strong foundation of training on which they can build their knowledge and skills.

The Flying car has been one of my dreams since childohood... Just imagine a world with "Bladerunner" movie style flying cars. Well, the Terrafugia Transition is a two-seater car that can convert from road to air in less than a minute, without the driver leaving the vehicle. The sci-fi inspired "roadable aircraft" is powered by the same 100-bhp engine whether it is on the ground or in the air. Certified as a Light Sport Aircraft, the Transition will require a Sport Pilot license or higher to fly. It can take off or land at any public use general aviation airport with at least 2,500 feet of runway. Before flying, the pilot extends the wings and performs a standard preflight. The engine power is directed to…
As primary schools nationwide close for the summer holidays, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) is asking motorists to be aware of children when using the roads and to take extreme care when driving. Parents and guardians are also being reminded to teach their children about road safety and ensure they play safely during the summer holidays. Mr Noel Brett, CEO of the RSA said: “All around the country, primary school children are looking forward to their summer holidays as schools to close until September. It’s an exciting time for them but it’s important for all of us who use the roads to be extra cautious. During the summer months, children will be spending more time outdoors. We don’t want what should be a time of fun and games to turn to tragedy. So we would ask all road-users…
This awesome Cosworth Subaru Impreza STI CS400 is in every sense the Lion’s roar!

Legendary tuning firm Cosworth has gotten its hands on the Impreza STI and heavily overhauled its engine to produce a scintillating 395bhp at 5,750rpm. That means the car can get from 0–100km/h in a supercar-beating 3.7 seconds, which is a massive 1.5 seconds faster than the standard STI.

But how the hell has Cosworth managed to squeeze this sort of pace out of a 2.5-litre, flat-four engine? As you may already have guessed, the answer is lots of boost and some trick bits. Starting with the internals, Cosworth has changed the STI’s pistons, rods, bearings, head gasket and oil…
Mary Cummins and her her 30-year-old Fiesta entered the record books this week, when she "scrapped" her aging car in Favour of a new 2010 model. Mary says they have had the car so long that it has become like an extra member of their family. They affectionately called it the "Red Ferrari" and the car achieved something approaching celebrity status on the roads around Kilmessan in the last few years. The standard equipment on Mary and Pat's new Fiesta (1.25 litre petrol) such as ABS, electric mirrors and windows, air bags, remote locking etc. are items that could very well have featured on the 1980s hit TV show, 'Tomorrow's World', when their original Fiesta first hit the road. Speaking at the handover of a new 2010 Ford Fiesta to Mary,…

At long last and after much staunch opposition from rural publicans the new lower drink- driving limit was voted through in the Dáil last night. The Bill passed through the Dáil without a vote as agreement on its contents was reached  on all sides. It now moves to the Seanad where it is due to be dealt with next week. The limit for learner and professional drivers has been cut from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 20mg and from 80mg to 50mg for other drivers. Studies have shown that dropping the limit to 50mg/100mls can significantly reduce road deaths. When Sweden

Forklifts are seriously misunderstood, as I have come to find out in recent weeks… and someone could be forgiven for having the wrong idea. I mean, whether it’s a Reach Truck, Counter-Balance Forklift or Power Pallet, but to name some of the types of forklift available, the one thing they all have in common is they do heavy lifting. Many people think of Forklifts as the work-horse which keeps warehouses and industry supplied and operating, but these machines are capable of so much more than just brute force. However, in the right operator’s hands forklifts can perform amazing feats of skill and accuracy, more often associated with a highly trained dancer - with proper forklift training and used correctly, a forklift has the power and grace to put Rudolf Nureyev to shame, with its power,…
